BEVERLEY JOHANSON

Tucked away beside the splendid Yarra Bend Park, Clifton Hill is full of perky little dogs on leads and kids on bikes. Something of an old-fashioned community is reflected in its neighbourhood shops and restaurants.

10 OF THE BEST - CLIFTON HILL

1 Marshall's Meats, 47 Ramsden Street. As well as King Island beef and other premium meats, this 100-year-old butcher shop sells Peking duck, seafood, smallgoods and the shop's own smoked lamb and cooked shanks.

2 Cafe Quince, 49 Spensley Street. A real neighbourhood meeting place. Weekend breakfasts - huge servings of old favourites - are the go here. Lunch is also popular.

3 Tannins, 404 Queens Parade. Wines from Europe and Australia's small, exciting vineyards. Emphasis on inexpensive, non-commercial drops. Art and major tastings on the first floor.

4 Vanilla 153, 153 Queens Parade. A great place for those who like several small dishes. Choose from either a modern Australian menu or tapas. There's a casual bar at the front and white-tablecloth dining at the rear.

5 Degani Bakery Cafe, 350 Queens Parade. Pastry and coffee for breakfast, cakes for special occasions and yummy, stone-baked bread for everyday. Enjoy your food while sitting at the tables on the footpath.

6 AUR Food Express, 294 Queens Parade. Everything you want and more in a local grocery. Fruit, vegies, meat, organic chickens, groceries, wine, coffee beans and a well-stocked deli.

7 Daily Catch, 352 Queens Parade. Above-average fish and chips with a serve of salad and a glass of Swords riesling or chardonnay. Fresh fish and seafood on sale.

8 Q, 304 Queens Parade. Breakfast, lunch, cakes, bread and a deli - Q serves a loyal clientele in fresh, bright surroundings.

9 Mojo's Weird Pizza, 384 Queens Parade. Gravy, horseradish mash, caramelised onions, sauerkraut, pork bangers and fresh parsley make up the Big Bang. Others have such toppings as satay sauce and sesame seeds. For the less adventurous, they do classics quite well.

10 Mosskito Cafe Bar and Lounge, 205-211 Queens Parade. Designed in 1939 by Moderne guru James Wardrop as a garage and residence, the Art Deco building is now a bar and restaurant. Large and loud with massive servings of Gen X comfort food.
